What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your jaw bone to the skull in front of each ear. TMD stands for temporomandibular joint disorder, which is when the TMJ affects the functionality of the jaw and causes symptoms like pain, stiffness, and swelling. TMJ disorder and TMD are the same thing, just written differently.

How is TMJ treated?

The good news is, TMJ treatments are typically non-invasive but still very effective. Sometimes all that’s needed are some simple jaw exercises that can strengthen and stretch the jaw muscles to relieve soreness and stiffness. If you tend to grind or clench your teeth at night, our team can have you fitted for a custom mouthguard to prevent the molars from grinding and stop TMJ at its source. In rare cases, severe TMJ is treated through more advanced dental services like oral surgery. You and your dentist will be able to determine the best treatment option for your specific needs.

If you are suffering from TMJ or have similar symptoms as described above, please get in touch with our front-office team to schedule an appointment.
