Root Canals 101
During a root canal, we make a small entry point on the top of your tooth. Through this entry point, we’ll remove the damaged pulp from inside the tooth’s canals. Once we remove the pulp, we fill in the tooth with a material called gutta percha to prevent future infection. Then, we’ll seal your tooth and schedule your second appointment where we’ll place a permanent dental crown for additional strength and support.

Root Canal FAQs
Why do I need a root canal?
There are many factors that can cause pain, discomfort, and infection in the root canals, including:
- Damage — If a tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken, the nerves inside of the tooth can die, leading to the eventual death of the tooth. Root canal therapy can remove the damaged nerves from the pulp to preserve the natural tooth.
- Decay & Infection — A severely decayed tooth can cause chronic tooth pain and require a root canal. With root canal therapy, we can remove the diseased pulp to save your natural tooth and restore it back to health.
What is the root canal procedure like?
While root canal therapy has an intimidating reputation, it’s actually nothing to fear! Root canal therapy is a quick, efficient procedure that can help you achieve almost-instant pain relief. We thoroughly numb the area before we begin and offer sedation so that you feel comfortable throughout the entire process.
What post-op instructions do I follow?
We tailor our aftercare instructions to each patient. However, there are some general guidelines that all patients should follow after their root canal. It is normal to experience some discomfort for a few days following the procedure. We recommend using an over-the-counter pain medication to help alleviate some of the temporary discomfort. When it comes to oral hygiene, try to chew on the other side of the mouth while the tooth heals. We also advise gently brushing the treated tooth as it can be sensitive during the recovery process.
