Thinking about dentures, but not sure what to expect? Dentures are a non-invasive tooth replacement option that many patients choose for their natural look and ease of use. Here at Normandy Dentistry, we offer a variety of options–full dentures, partial dentures, and implant supported dentistry. Read on to learn more about the procedures available.
The process may start with the extraction of any remaining natural teeth. From there, once your gums have healed, the dentist will be able to take impressions of your bite, which will inform the shape of the dentures. That final pair will usually be made out of acrylic or resin, giving the new set a very realistic look. Your dentist will walk you through how to wear your dentures, including the use of a denture adhesive. You may experience some discomfort at first, but the dentures will soon fit comfortably.
If you’re dealing with just small gaps in the smile, there’s no need to extract all of your teeth to make way for a full set of dentures. Partial dentures are also a great option. Still removable, partial dentures are typically attached to the natural teeth that surround the gap. That means that the process often involves putting crowns on the surrounding teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are kept in place by four dental implants. This option will look much like the full set of dentures, but will snap into place rather than requiring the use of a dental adhesive. The dental implants themselves will need to come before the dentures. An implant is a titanium post that serves as a replacement tooth root. Inserted into the jaw bone, the implant will fuse with the bone and, once healed, the restoration tooth can be attached.
